Tonight we juxtapose two one-act English operas, Purcells Dido and Aeneas (1689) and Vaughan Williams powerful setting of Irish playwright John Millington Synges Riders to the Sea (1937). Dido and Aeneas is a retelling of the classic epic set on the Carthaginian shores, while Riders to the Sea is an intimate portrayal of an Irish family on the Aran islands. Both intense, concise tragedies expose the poetic dignity of endurance and submission. Sharing one evening, one visual world, we hope the underperformed, gripping 20th century opera casts new light on a classic masterpiece from the beginnings of opera history. In October 2004, we mounted a production of Pergolesis La Serva Padrona in nine days, from start to finish. Though for its first production, the young artists of Melopoeia have drawn from historical performance practices while discovering a new visual language in re-creating two repertoire works, Melopoeia aims to dedicate itself equally to the production of contemporary works. Melopoeia is currently planning productions of two one-act operas by Brian Hulse, The Letter (2003) and The Game (2004), the former based on an Edith Wharton short story, the latter on a Jack London novella. Julia Carey and Kate Greenhalgh will lead this production in May 2006. Kate Greenhalgh (Co-Founder, Producer and Director) Kate Greenhalgh began her musical studies on violin and piano, and studied vocal, viola, composition and conducting in high school. After five years of studio art training at the Huntington School of Fine Arts in New York, Kate is in her senior year studying Music and German literature at Harvard. Kate has been involved in many capacities in Harvards music and opera scene. She was Assistant Music Director and Associate Stage Director for Lowell House Operas 2004 production of Ravels Lenfant et les Sortilges and Stravinskys LHistoire du Soldat. In February 2005, Kate directed and designed Bernsteins Candide with the Dunster House Opera. This past June she worked under Sarah Meyers as Assistant Director with the Boston Opera Projects New England premiere of Mark Adamos Little Women. Upcoming productions include directing and designing Brecht/Weills Threepenny Opera with Lowell House Opera in March 2006, producing opera premieres with the Harvard Contemporary Music Ensemble in April, and producing and directing Melopoeias Brian Hulse double bill later that month. She is looking forward to light designing her first opera next month, a production of Poulencs Dialogues of the Carmelites with Dunster House Opera.
